The Blue Room is a small sea cave on the west coast near Santa Cruz, just over an hour's drive from Willemstad. Sunlight enters through the underwater opening and turns the cave bright blue. There is no road to it: you go by boat, kayak or swimming and dive about one meter (3 ft) underwater through the entrance.
The easiest way is the Blue Room Snorkel Tour (€ 134 per person): about 6 hours, with pickup from your accommodation, an off-road drive along the west coast and in the afternoon the boat to the cave. The light is most beautiful around midday, when the sun is high.
Below you can read all the ways to get there, who it suits and what to watch out for. Checked on September 27, 2026.

The Blue Room Snorkel Tour
If you book the Blue Room Snorkel Tour, you’re picked up at 10.00. First you drive off-road with a local guide to remote parts of the west coast. In the afternoon you board the boat, which drops you off close to the cave. You snorkel inside and see the cave light up.
The tour takes about 6 hours and runs Monday to Friday. Snorkel gear, water and snacks are included. You pay a 20% deposit when booking and the rest on the day.

How do you get inside the cave?
The entrance is just below the waterline. You take a breath, dive about one meter (3 ft) through a dark passage and surface inside. There is enough room inside to float and look around. Wait for a calm moment between waves and then swim through in one go.
If you find it scary, practice first in shallow water with your mask on. If that feels tight right away, skip the passage: snorkeling outside the cave is lovely too.
When is the light best?
| Time of day | Effect |
|---|---|
| In the morning | Nice, but a less intense blue; calmer water |
| Around midday and early afternoon | Sun high, strongest blue |
| Late afternoon | Weaker light, less effect |
| Cloudy or after rain | Murkier water, much less blue |

With waves, the water sloshes against the rocks at the entrance and it gets slippery. If in doubt, do not go in and ask a boatman about the sea conditions.
Who is the Blue Room for?
- You need to be a good swimmer and comfortable going briefly underwater.
- Not suitable if you are claustrophobic or for young children.
- Older kids who swim well can come, preferably by boat. More ideas in Curaçao with children.
- Never go alone, even if you are a strong swimmer.
- Do not wear jewelry or loose sunglasses: what comes off, you will not find again.
Prefer snorkeling without an underwater passage?
Aboard the Westpunt Catamaran Snorkel Tour (€ 125 per person) you spend a full day along the same coast, with snorkel stops and food and drinks on board. Want to see more spots in less time? The Snorkel Trip with the Powerboat (€ 165 per person) is a faster option.

Practical tips and combining
Santa Cruz has hardly any facilities. Bring snorkel gear, fins, water, sunscreen and cash for a boat. Leave nothing visible in the car: break-ins happen regularly at remote bays. More about safety in is Curaçao safe.
Combine the cave with the west side: Grote Knip, Cas Abao and Playa Porto Mari are close, and Christoffel Park and Shete Boka are not far either. See Westpunt in one day, the most beautiful beaches of Curaçao and what to pack for Curaçao.
