Washington Slagbaai National Park was established in 1969 and is the first nature reserve of the former Netherlands Antilles. The park covers an area of about one fifth of the island and was formerly inhabited by the Caiquetio Indians. It is also the site of Slagbaai, the largest plantation from the time of slavery.
Today, the park boasts two protected wetlands, better known as the "Ramsar”sites. These protected sites provide a safe haven for Bonaire's birds and reptiles and are truly beautiful to behold. The pearly white beaches in the park are also an important nesting place for sea turtles.
